Aloha mai kakou,
For many visitors, Lahaina is home to some of the most beautiful beaches that Hawaii has to offer. But for Kanaka Maoli, Lahaina is known for the history that it holds. In 1802, King Kamehameha made Lahaina the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. A brick palace, residences, and royal buildings was the center of the Hawaiian government for over 50 years before its relocation to Honolulu. Lahaina with its royal roots, the largest Banyan tree in the United States, and a town rich in Native Hawaiian culture, remains a pivotal place in Hawaiian history.
On August 8, 2023 wildfires across Maui took dozens of lives, forced thousands to evacuate, and devastated the historic whaling town of Lahaina. Wind from Hurricane Dora and dry conditions created wildfires that ravaged the town in mere hours. The town of over 13,000 were left stranded after thousands of structures were destroyed or damaged.
To the people of Lahaina, our hearts are breaking from this horrific situation. Our deepest condolences go out to all who have lost loved ones and those who had your homes, businesses, and community taken from you.
UTOPIA PDX stands with our Lahui of Lahaina. We know that the spirit, hope, and love of Lahaina remains strong.
